Hesselholdt & Mejlvang

today I was lucky to have a peek of the artist group Hesselholdt & Mejlvang's work for their upcoming exhibitions in their beautiful temporary studio at the Danish Art Workshops.
I saw draped textiles, fabric guirlandes, ceramic works and sketches.

More about Hesselholdt & Mejlvang's work. Photos above from the same place.

Jockum Nordström: Sailor och Pekka

One thing I really enjoy when we are on vacation is using plenty of time searching for new books for the kids (and myself, of course). I browse through the bookshelves at flea markets and thrift stores and in local book shops. This summer I found several really nice ones - one pile is left in the house, another is brought with us home. I picked out some of them to show you and recommend throughout the nearest time.

This is one of Jockum Nordström's wonderful Sailor and Pekka books. I have been dying to get my hands on these books for so long - and was really happy (- and somewhat surprised) to find a couple of them in the local book shop nearby our Swedish house. It was no disapointment. The illustrations really are something special, and Frida Viola loves the cartoon like parts. I love the colours, the collages and the wonderful expressions of the characters. The first three photos depict Sailor's hallucinatory dreams while having a fever.

Signe Kjær

Last week it was A's birthday. We did celebrate him a little but not far as much as I would have liked since our days have been quite filled up lately. He did have some gifts though - and even some quite good ones :)
Frida Viola helped me choose one of Signe Kjær's beautiful little paintings for him. She picked out the girl you see above - and it's really such a fine little work that we are all so happy with. Signe Kjær makes wonderful, poetic, fine and delicate illustrations and works and I am looking so much forward to follow her and see more.

Once the package with the girl had arrived Frida Viola also wanted to paint some girls so that A had 3 girls for his birthday - one for each of us. She did the two below. Needless to say that he was very happy.

flowers

Yesterday Frida Viola and I went to see the Flowers and World Views exhibition at the National Gallery. Primary the first part of the exhibition with the drawings and paintings from The Gottorfer Codex was really beautiful and worth seeing, but the best thing about the exhibition was actually the drawing area. It had such a beautiful choreography and calm atmosphere with fresh flowers and pencils inserted in the tabletops, and we spent more time here than in the actual exhibition.

Frida Viola made the painting at the top with Paper - the best app for sketching on the iPad ever!

new desk, new surroundings...

Look how very, very lucky I am. At the moment I am working in these so inspiring surroundings, and the ladies behind all these fantastic works and creations give me the best company, inspiration and good advice. I am writing some texts about the Danish design collective Meyer-Lavigne, and I am so lucky that Kristine and Sabine have an extra desk in their studio, so that I can actually be amidst their universe. I am sensing, looking and touching and getting more and more familiar with all their friendly creatures that live here.

The photos show a sneak peak into their studio - sketches, inspiration, finished works and not least some of their kids' fantastic creations.

[Sorry - it seems as if you cannot link to Meyer-Lavigne's website at the moment but if you go directly to meyerlavigne.dk it should work!]

Hannah Waldron makes beautiful works, often with graphical patterns and structures in bright colours.
I love her maze furoshiki textile.

Troels Jorn's book

Molly had this wonderful book for her 1-year birthday that many of you are probably already familiar with: "Troels Jorns bog om den sultne løve, den glade elefant, den lille mus og Jens Pismyre" [~"Troels Jorn's book about the hungry lion, the happy elephant, the little mouse and Jens Piss Ant"] written and drawn by his father, the Danish Cobra artist Asger Jorn. The book is originally from the late 1940s but it was refound in the 60s by the artist and his son at the attic. It wasn't published until after the artist had passed away in 1973 and has now come in a new edition.

The book has already become a favourite here, and we have read it over and over again. The story is really fun reading with lots of nonsense words and repetitions, and the handwritten (and very expressionistic) text works as illustration in itself with BIG letters for shouting and trembling letters for scarry feelings etc. The illustrations are of course very Cobra inspired with the group's ideas about the spontaneous abstract painting held in mind as well as their fascination of the childish universe and children's fantasy.

The book reminds me about Egon Mathiesen's fantastic children's books, written in the same period - here and here.

Atak

I came across the works of Berlin based artist Atak via Milk. I would love to go and see his exhibition at Foto Kino in Marseilles. And Foto Kino seems to be a really nice exhibition space with lots of fine projects, exhibitions and even publications.

finally mine

Remember this book? A's parents bought it for me for my birthday in December, and it's such a beautiful book. I haven't had time to read much in it yet, but browsing through it is very promising in itself.
